House Call: Do You Have a Fatty Liver?

A lot of people have fatty livers and don’t even know it. You are losing weight. Good. That’s one of the best ways to improve liver health.

Tylenol and other pain relievers contain acetaminophen. That’s hard on your liver. Cut back on Tylenol. Or get off of it. Giving your liver a break from alcohol during ZReduction helps your liver, too.

We like Dr. Mark Hyman. He tells you how to improve liver health in this 7-minute video.

Your liver works hard to keep you healthy. Find out how to make it work better.

“Save the liver.”

Big Fat Lies

Ancel Keys was the man who got America to fear eating fat. This landed him on the cover of Time. Only trouble was, his Lipid Hypothesis that fat clogged arteries and made you fat was wrong.

I know. Hard to believe, right?

Another word for “hypothesis” is “guess.” Keys guessed wrong. And America’s obesity crisis can be traced directly back to his flawed science.

Watch this 2 minute 34-second video clip from FatHead and see how it makes you feel:

Annoying, isn’t it?

Why You Get Fat from Fat Head

For decades we’ve been told gaining and losing weight is all about the calories. Just one little problem: the research says otherwise. Diabetics undergo dramatic weight changes when they adjust their insulin levels — and so do you. Your diet determines how much insulin your body will produce over time. From the documentary “Fat Head.”

Being fat is not your fault.

You just got bad information. Here’s some good information; critical information. Please watch this clip from Fat Head, a documentary by Tom Naughton.

This 3-minute video explains a concept that is important to understand if you struggle with losing weight.

Fat production is hormonal.

Insulin is a hormone that has two jobs. Everyone knows about the first job: it helps control blood sugar levels, but we forget that insulin’s other job is to make fat. That’s what the video clip is talking about. Eat too many carbohydrates and your blood sugar level goes up. Your body responds by making more insulin, which will convert that sugar into fat. This is why eating too many carbohydrates makes you gain weight.

If you’re eating too many sugars and starches, your body is always in insulin overdrive. As long as your insulin levels are high your body will turn just about every bit of carbohydrate to fat. Eventually, your pancreas can’t keep up with the extra insulin production and it breaks down. That’s when you become a type 2 diabetic.

Plan Z gives you a food plan that helps cut your sugar and carbs back without sacrificing flavor. By day three of Plan Z, you stop making too much insulin, so you stop making fat. And you’ll start burning the fat you have.

If you can get your mind around that, you’re on your way to Plan Z success.

Nightline Interview with Robert H. Lustig About Fructose

Dr Robert H Lustig, a pediatrician, wants to make it illegal for kids under 16 to buy a Coke. He is serious.

In this 8-minute Nightline segment, Dr. Lustig tells you why sugar is so bad.

After watching it, how do you feel about food companies that force feed sugar to their customers? Do you side with Dr. Lustig? Or did the lady from the Corn Refiners Association win the debate?

If you’re a little angry, then I’m doing my job.

Irately,

Sugar, the Elephant in the Kitchen: Robert Lustig

Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health

Over 200 million Americans consume food products made of wheat every day. As a result, over 100 million experience some form of adverse health effect, ranging from minor rashes to high blood sugar to unattractive stomach bulges preventative cardiologist William Davis calls "wheat bellies." According to Davis, that excess fat has nothing to do with gluttony, sloth, or too much butter: it’s due to the whole grain wraps we eat for lunch.

After witnessing over 2,000 patients regain health after giving up wheat, Davis reached the disturbing conclusion that wheat is the single largest contributor to the nationwide obesity epidemic—and that elimination of wheat is key to dramatic weight loss and optimal health. In national bestseller, Dr. Davis exposes the harmful effects of what is actually a product of genetic tinkering and agribusiness being sold to the American public as "wheat"—and provides readers with a user-friendly, step-by-step plan to navigate a new wheat-free lifestyle.

Informed by cutting-edge science and nutrition, along with case studies from men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in health after waving goodbye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at what is truly making Americans sick and an action plan to clear our plates of this seemingly benign ingredient.

The End of Overeating

Most of us know what it feels like to fall under the spell of food—when one slice of pizza turns into half a pie, or a handful of chips leads to an empty bag. But it’s harder to understand why we can't seem to stop eating—even when we know better. When we want so badly to say "no," why do we continue to reach for food?

Dr. David Kessler, the dynamic former FDA commissioner who reinvented the food label and tackled the tobacco industry, now reveals how the food industry has hijacked the brains of millions of Americans. The result? America’s number-one public health issue. Dr. Kessler cracks the code of overeating by explaining how our bodies and minds are changed when we consume foods that contain sugar, fat, and salt. Food manufacturers create products by manipulating these ingredients to stimulate our appetites, setting in motion a cycle of desire and consumption that ends with a nation of overeaters. The End of Overeating explains for the first time why it is exceptionally difficult to resist certain foods and why it’s so easy to overindulge.

Dr. Kessler met with top scientists, physicians, and food industry insiders. The End of Overeating uncovers the shocking facts about how we lost control over our eating habits—and how we can get it back. Dr. Kessler presents groundbreaking research, along with what is sure to be a controversial view inside the industry that continues to feed a nation of overeaters—from popular brand manufacturers to advertisers, chain restaurants, and fast food franchises.

For the millions of people struggling with weight as well as for those of us who simply don't understand why we can't seem to stop eating our favorite foods, Dr. Kessler’s cutting-edge investigation offers new insights and helpful tools to help us find a solution.

There has never been a more thorough, compelling, or in-depth analysis of why we eat the way we do.

How Diet Soda Causes Weight Gain

Tap into some good information on water and weight loss.

This video clip reinforces why we want you to drink at least 70 ounces of plain water per day.

One hundreds ounces is even better.

In a recent beta test, we had our dieters carefully track their water intake on their first week of ZReduction.

The results are in:

  • Dieters who drank more than 100 oz of water per day lost an average of 11.1 pounds on their first week of ZReduction.
  • Dieters who drank between 60 oz and 100 oz of water per day lost an average of 8.7 pounds their first week.

Dieters who drank less than 60 oz of water per day lost an average of 7.4 pounds their first week. That means they lost 33% less weight than the folks who drank more than 100 oz of water per day.

How much water did you drink today?

Glug,

P.S. I know this isn’t easy for everyone. You and your body will both get used to it fairly soon. Imagine how much healthier you’ll be when you crave water instead of a soft drink.

David Kessler: The End of Overeating

As you can already tell, Plan Z is different. Plan Z works on your body and your brain. You’re eating a whole food diet. You’ve eliminated processed foods filled with sugar and high fructose corn syrup. The weight is coming off. You are learning why you got fat. And you’re going to learn how never to get fat again.

Former FDA Commissioner David Kessler wondered why he kept gaining weight. He wrote about his discoveries in his book, The End of Overeating.

In today’s must-see video, Kessler underscores the importance of new learning to combat food cravings that are hardwired into our brains. If you don’t take advantage of this new learning, you will most likely start going back to your old eating habits. That’s why every diet you’ve ever tried failed you.

You didn’t get your mind right. You didn’t learn to get mad at foods that make you fat.

You couldn’t say no to your cookie-pushing relatives and bagel bearing co-workers. You thought that the secretary who always had a bowl of candy on her desk was nice.

Listen to David Kessler describe what the food companies do to make you crave their food. Then think about what the food does to you. It should make you mad enough to override the food cues he talks about.

Connecting you to experts like Dr. David Kessler is one way Plan Z by Zola works on your brain. You will never go back to your old way of eating. You can be free from cravings and will be too smart to fail. Please take this new learning seriously. I’m not asking you to read Kessler’s 336 page book. I’m asking you to take a mere 15-minutes and get the gist of the book from an interview he did during his book tour.

Stay angry and you will stay thin,

10 Reasons Why Ghee Is Great

Gee, I love my ghee.

Ghee is an Indian food. It’s a shelf-stable clarified butter. I have written an article about Ghee if you would like to read it.

My husband found this 3-minute clip on YouTube about the 10 best things about Ghee.

Enjoy!

A List of Really Good Fats

Fat doesn’t make you fat.

There are good fats and bad fats. Here’s a list of really good fats. They are good because they nourish your body at the cellular level. They don’t amp up the acidity in your body. In ZReboot and ZLife, you want to eat more and more of these good fats.

Don’t worry. You won’t overdo them. They are so nourishing and so filling that you will be full. And you won’t be starving for the bad fats:

Here’s the list:

  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Butter
  • Extra virgin coconut oil
  • Flaxseed oil and flax meal
  • Avocado oil and avocadoes
  • Almonds oil and almonds
  • Walnuts oil and walnuts
  • Olives
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Cod liver oil (Your grandmother knew.)
  • Wild cold water fish (I’ve been to a fish farm. Trust me you want to avoid farm-raised fish.)
  • Coconut milk, unsweetened
  • Organic goat cheese
  • Organic free range egg yolks
  • Almond butter
  • Pine nuts
  • Most raw nuts and seeds
  • Macadamia nut oil
  • Borage oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Unsweetened peanut butter

Your body needs healthy fats to run smoothly. The more of these good fats you eat, the less you will need the refined oils you may have been used to. In fact, when you decide to have that muffin at the office, it will taste like the processed piece of refined, manufactured food that it is.

Are you angry that onion rings and French fries didn’t make the list?

Or are you angry that the restaurant dares to serve you a thousand calories worth of starch whether you want them or not? That’s the more important question.

If your mind is right, you know the answer.

Avoid:

  • Canola oil
  • Vegetable oil
  • Corn oil
  • Soybean oil

See how easy this is?

How Healthy Fats and Oils Can Change Your Health

Here’s a little video on good fats for cooking, seasoning and salad oils.

Is Sugar Toxic?

The more I learn about the bad things sugar does, the easier it is to avoid it. So many of our clients report improved health even a few weeks into the ZReduction phase.

“Sugar is toxic,” says Dr. Robert Lustig. I found this 13-minute video of Lustig being interviewed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta for 60 Minutes. Toward the end, Dr. Gupta gives the rep from the National Sugar Association a chance to respond.

Being a lobbyist for Big Sugar brings out the worst in some people.

Here’s the video.

As you know by now, there are delicious desserts you can have in ZReboot and ZLife. Our web guy Efrem loves this truffle recipe.

Hard to be angry with Cognac Truffles on your diet.

Sweet,

King Corn

King Corn is a documentary that didn’t get wide circulation. CBS Sunday Morning covered the premier of the film. Our government subsidizes corn farmers. That makes corn an incredibly cheap ingredient. That’s why it’s in so many processed foods. Start with this 5 minute video clip:

Here’s an extended clip from the documentary:

There are more clips from the movie on YouTube. If you’re an Amazon Prime member you can watch it free on demand.  My job is to keep you just angry enough to keep you away from the foods that made you fat and will make you fat again if you’re not very careful.

How am I doing?

Furiously,

Younger Next Year

Announcing the paperback edition of Younger Next Year (paid link), the New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller, co-written by one of the country’s most prominent internists, Dr. Henry "Harry" Lodge, and his star patient, the 73-year-old Chris Crowley. These are the books that show us how to turn back our biological clocks—how to put off 70% of the normal problems of aging (weakness, sore joints, bad balance) and eliminate 50% of serious illness and injury.

The key to the program is found in Harry's Rules: Exercise six days a week. Don't eat crap. Connect and commit to others. There are seven rules altogether, based on the latest findings in cell physiology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, and experimental psychology. Dr. Lodge explains how and why they work—and Chris Crowley, who is living proof of their effectiveness (skiing better today, for example, than he did twenty years ago), gives the just-as-essential motivation.

Both men and women can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, then continue to live with newfound vitality and pleasure deep into our 80s and beyond.

Fat Facts: Dr. Andrew Weil

You might actually believe that fat doesn't make you fat for now. How will you hold onto those beliefs in ZLife? Because I guarantee you that you will hear conflicting information on the news or in a commercial today.

Maybe watching this 8-minute video clip featuring Dr. Andrew Weil will help.

Fats and Oils

I used to buy I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. Zola and I thought margarine was a healthy choice. What a crock we were sold by Big Food.  And I do mean what a Country Crock.

I enjoy butter today without fear.

This 9-minute video  gives you keen insights into how the corn oil manufacturers demonized saturated fats back in the day.

See how you've been manipulated?

How does that make you feel?

Angry I'll bet.

In fact, I'm counting on it.

The Story of You: (And How to Create a New One)

The Story of YouOn the heels of his successful 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself and Reinventing Yourself, motivational speaker and author Steve Chandler has written his life's masterpiece, The Story of You.

The Story of You is the book Steve Chandler was always meant to write. In the tradition of Covey's 7 Habits and Scott Peck's Road Less Traveled, Chandler's personal growth gem transcends all categories to impact psychology, business, self-help, and contemporary social commentary. For the first time in history, readers have a definitive book on what keeps them from succeeding.

Chandler breaks new ground with his startling revelations and fresh interpretations about people as diverse as: Elvis Presley, Van Gogh, Governor Bill Richardson, actor Tyrese Gibson, Dr. Andrew Weil, Hugh Hefner, Mark Twain and the biblical character Lazarus.

By exposing people's stories as the most false and limiting part of their lives, Chandler invites you into a new world of action and creative accomplishment.

With humor and biting critiques, Chandler exposes people's false ego stories for what they are and reveals the source of all success: the inner energy of will and spirit. Filled with stunningly candid dialogue from pivotal coaching sessions that Chandler has conducted (and been the subject of!), this book is the most dramatic exposure yet of how we hold ourselves back by the stories we believe and then tell.
