Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

Add to favorites
Plan Z Phase: This is a Z2 (ZReduction) recipe. We are so happy that Dieter Jessica came up with this cabbage recipe because this crunchy leafy vegetable is not one of Zola’s favorites! Jessica made this meal on one of her first days of ZReduction. It was so delicious she wanted to share it with everyone. Enjoy!
Servings: Serves 6-8
Ingredients:
- 2lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 small cabbage
- 2 cans diced tomatoes
- 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
- ½ cup water
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Heat a pan on high. Add the beef and onion together, cooking the beef until it is no longer pink. Once the meat starts to brown add the garlic and cook for 1 additional minute. Lastly, add the remaining ingredients to the pan and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer the cabbage mixture for 20-30 minutes or until the cabbage is tender.
Serve in a bowl. You can eat it just like a soup for a warm and hearty meal.
Enjoy!
Cheers,

When I was a kid this was served at very special meals. My mother made hers plain. I had no idea how incredibly fabulous this meat could taste until I started adding the meat rub!

The Berghoff is a famous Chicago restaurant. Their creamed spinach is an institution in itself. This is my ZReduction version.

I liked this. It came together quickly and was a filling meal.
How many ounces are the two cans of diced tomatoes? I hope to make this soon!
Each can will have about 14-15 oz of tomatoes. Thanks!
How much is a serving?
A serving would be a cup or a cup and a half.
Very tasty; we like red pepper on cabbage, so I added a bit. Used leftovers on salad like taco salad…yummy! Another hit Zola!
I made this during my first week of ZReduction and really liked it. I was the only one in my family eating it, so it made me a big pot I was able to get quite a few meals from. Sometimes since I would get hungry a lot in the beginning I would add a bunch of spinach to my cup and a half serving and it helped me tremendously. Very good flavor, really has the flavor profile of cabbage rolls.
Does one serving of this count as a serving of both protein and vegetable? Or can I have an additional serving of veg?
Hi Carisa,
Great question! For this recipe, I would count one serving as 1/2 of your veggie portion for one meal.
Enjoy!
